Happy Birthday to MetalBoatbuilding.org! PDF Print E-mail

That's right, it's birthday time. It's been two whole years since the Dirty Dozen got together and launched MetalBoatbuilding.org, and what a ride it's been! Possibly the most rewarding part has been seeing such a diverse group get together and donate time, effort and some cash with no expectation of gain whatsoever except to create something useful and make it work! On the other hand, it has been a bucketload of fun, too!

So congratulations and happy birthday in whatever language to all those who have worked to make this happen, and to those who have made the effort to frequent these pages.

MetalBoatbuilding.org was established as a resource for metal boat builders and owners, and those just plain interested in learning more about metal boats. Or any boats, for that matter, since a lot of the information applies no matter what the construction material. That said, there are many advantages to steel and aluminum as hull materials, and the information here may help a prospective home builder towards a decision in that respect. But whatever the material, we're all boaters, or intend to be so, or have been, and we welcome you to learn from the site contents and contribute  some of your own thoughts, ideas, experiences and knowledge.

On a broader scale, MetalBoatbuilding.org is a community of metal boat people from around the world, and the community would like to encourage all similarly interested people to participate in an ongoing discussion of metal boats, and to contribute to and learn from that discussion. The site is intended to support that community without the need to purchase memberships or join a formal organization. It is funded by donations and operated and maintained by a core group of volunteers (the Dirty Dozen, and yes, there's more to that story) for the benefit of other metal boat aficionados from around the world. Watch this section of the site for tidbits of information and news about events and happenings you might find interesting.

The site also hosts the MetalBoatbuilding Forum, moderated by some of the most experienced and knowledgeable folks in the boatbuilding arena. Use the link to the left of the page to navigate there and look through the forums. Feel free to post questions and start the ball rolling!

Besides the always informative Forum, you will also find a (soon to be) complete guide to building a metal boat in the Metal Boat Guidebook section. This section is evolving as we speak, due largely to the efforts of Holger, who is building his metal boat in Germany.

In addition to the Guidebook, there is now also a new Charts and Tables section. Here you will find, well, charts and tables. They include, or will include, listings of just about everything that goes into building a metal boat, from fasteners to steel and aluminum to welding rod. There are international comparison charts to help users differentiate between specs in different countries and under different systems of measurement. Keep checking back for the latest updates.

And don't miss the User Projects Blog, where users can post updates on their boatbuilding projects and adventures or misadventures. While you're at it, why not register and post a blog entry of your own?

Hi Everyone! Your metalboatbuilding.org admin team has been busy with site upgrades and generally "tweaking" things here and there to try and make the site as easy to use as possible! The latest change has to do with registrations and user logins.

Note that users cannot register for the forum directly. Registration can be done at the site front (home) page, i.e., on this page.

Guest users, meaning those who are "browsing" but have not yet registered a username, have "read only" access to the forum. This means they can browse and read posts but cannot open topics or reply to posts. Registration will enable users to open topics and reply to posts. Registration is free and easy, but must be done from the front (home) page of the site. If you are at the forum index page you can get to the site home page by selecting the "Site Home" button located on the left side of the navigation bar just above the topic listings.

When you register and activate a username, your user details will also be ported over to the forum area, so that there is no double registration required. I.e., one registration will enable you to browse all areas of the site.

For the time being, you actually have two login options when visiting the online forum. You can login at the site front page as usual, and then when you visit the forum area you will automatically be logged in there also. Or, if the forum is your primary interest and you would prefer to go directly there, you can bookmark the forum and log in there directly. When you leave, if you are using a public computer, like at a coffee shop or someplace, please do remember to log out so the browser page is closed.

If you have any difficulty logging in or with any other aspects of the site, please drop an email to the admin ("admin at this-site") and we'll have a look.

Thanks for joining us, and we hope you find the site useful and maybe even entertaining at times. There is a world of information here.

The admin team
